The American Dental Association has created informative videos called Ask the Dentist. Here is their video on: 'How Can I Help My Elderly Parent Brush Her Teeth?'
With the American population living longer, seniors' oral health has become an important issue, as has the widespread problem of elder abuse. Every year more than 2.5 million older Americans may be victims of elder abuse, and in some cases dentists serve as the first line of defense, according to a report in the May/June 2005 issue of General Dentistry, the clinical, peer-reviewed journal of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). Our
Care for Our Seniors
Teeth change over time, just as our bodies do. Over the
years, teeth may become stained from tobacco, coffee,
tea or red wine. Plaque may build up, leading to serious
health problems from infected gums. If certain
medications are taken, the flow of saliva can be
reduced. Fillings crack or weaken over time. We can help
to prevent these problems with regular checkups. Good
daily hygiene and nutrition are also important to
maintain or prevent tooth decay or loss. We always
advise our patients that if gums become red or start to
bleed and/or teeth begin to loosen, to please contact us
at your earliest convenience.
